About Us

Welcome to Murrundindi, a cultural sanctuary where the ancient traditions and profound wisdom of the Indigenous peoples of Victoria are revered and celebrated. The name, "Murrundindi," means Home in the Mountain and was given to Murrundindi in a naming ceremony by his mother Gumbri. Murrundindi is the Ngurungaeta (Head Man) and Elder of the Wurundjeri tribe and he is also a direct descendant of Bebejern, Ngurungaeta (King) of the Wurundjeri - who signed the 1835 treaty of Melbourne with John Batman.

Murrundindi is much more than a peace keeper and a spiritual custodian of the land around the Melbourne region. He has spent the last 40 years sharing his culture and his message of love and acceptance through education in schools, many communities, and at Healesville Sanctuary. He is keenly motivated to share his knowledge of plants, animals, food and cultural practices of the Wurundjeri with all people.

The Murrundindi brand was created to not only acknowledge the  offerings of Murrundindi back to our communities and to share Murrundindi's culture but to purposefully shine a light on his values which include Respect, Unity, and Inclusivity.

Our Mission

Murrundindi is more than a name; it's a commitment to preserving and sharing the legacy of Victoria's Indigenous people. Our mission is to be a bridge between the timeless traditions of Indigenous cultures and the modern world, fostering respect, understanding, and recognition for their invaluable contributions to the global tapestry of human heritage.

Cultural Heritage

Embedded within the heart of Murrundindi is the essence of Indigenous Victorian culture. We hold deep respect for the diversity of our culture and the connection we have with the Land, Sky, and Waterways. Our purpose is to illuminate the significance of our stories, art, and rituals, empowering these narratives to thrive within the consciousness of people from all walks of life.

Preserving Traditions

At Murrundindi, we believe that the vibrancy of Indigenous cultures enriches the fabric of our society. By collaborating directly with Indigenous artists, artisans, and communities, we provide a platform for their skills and insights to flourish. In doing so, we aim to ensure that the ancient practices, handed down through generations, remain vibrant and relevant in our modern world.

Cultivating Connection

Murrundindi embodies a space where cultural exchange takes root. We encourage dialogue, learning, and the sharing of experiences between Indigenous communities and a global audience. Through our offerings, whether art, crafts, or knowledge, we aspire to build bridges of understanding that transcend borders and foster unity.

Sustainability and Empowerment

We are dedicated to ethical practices that uplift both people and the environment. Engagement with Murrundindi means becoming a partner in sustaining Indigenous livelihoods and traditional practices. A portion of the proceeds from our endeavors directly supports community initiatives that empower Indigenous individuals and nurture their cultural heritage.
